Chapter 20

Shadow Drain

Going down the stairs, Arthur entered the kitchen to prepare his latest elixir. He no longer had the special blood gel that he’d used to process the shadow panther core, but Arthur hoped that his half-breed title would make it so that he didn’t need its healing properties when ingesting the infected core. At least that's what the title's description told him. Unless he was completely misunderstanding it. Titles were a fickle thing, and his boasted a level of originality he doubted would be replicated by anything he might gain in the future.

Half-breed- (Successfully absorb a monster core as a Human before awakening your magical affinities and reaching level 2) Raises base constitution by 30% and gives one the ability to gain stats from further monster core consumption

He wasn’t entirely human anymore, and so he hoped that he wouldn’t just die after consuming the core. Plus, his body had gotten much stronger since the last time he’d done so, and Arthur was sure that his vitality would allow him to shrug off most poisons like they were common beverages. Maybe that would apply to monster cores too.

Shit, man. The nerves are getting to me.

First things first, though; Arthur needed some of his blood. It was the closest thing he had to the blood gel he'd used, and the effects of the two were practically identical. And with Arthur's outrageous investments into vitality, he hoped that he had only enhanced it further.

Liquid vitality- (Possess extremely regenerative blood with unique properties) Increases base health regeneration by 10%

It was only when he placed a kitchen knife on his palm that Arthur realised he had a serious problem. He literally couldn’t cut through his own skin. Either the factory-made blade wasn’t sharp enough, or his constitution had reached a point where normal pre-system melee weapons simply couldn’t harm him. In any other scenario, Arthur would have been ecstatic.

The universe is telling you something here, Arthur. Don't ignore the red flags, man.

He closed his eyes.

Using the knife like a saw, it took him a minute of constant motion before he had a deep enough cut to draw blood from. Surprisingly, it didn’t even hurt, almost as if constitution played a factor in reducing his sense of pain the higher it got. That would get dangerous real fast.

Squeezing his hand tightly, Arthur let his blood slowly drip into a small metal bowl, waiting the full five minutes it took until he had enough to serve his purposes. He had to flex his palm every so often to keep the wound from closing, and it was with a sick sense of disassociated fascination that he observed his regenerating skin's struggle against his constant self-harm. What the fuck am I even doing?

Arthur took a deep breath and tried to clear his thoughts.

Placing the Rodent core inside the crimson liquid, he prayed that it would dissolve like the panther core he’d used in his previous concoction. It seemed that someone was listening for once, as the core started liquefying rapidly almost as if his blood was a highly corrosive acid.
